I hope you will consider making this new update optional, or let users be on the app in “old mode” where we can choose to keep the game as a 24 hour puzzle. Your new feature takes away the time limit on the puzzle and also means that you can’t see the previous day’s answers. It also prevented me from endlessly playing spelling bee. That frame rate is quite low, and users would experience the associated progression of images on-screen as choppy. The majority of frame rate measurements were below six frames per second (fps), both while the application was idle and as it performed the various tasks tested. Frame rates while performing various application tasks. An early set of results from those measurements is shown in Figure 2. For a broad representation, frame-rate measurements were taken over sampling periods approximately 10-15 seconds long, while the application was idle, as well as while the anatomical model was being rotated on-screen and while the view from the user’s perspective was being zoomed in and out. To quantify a key aspect of performance as it relates to user experience, the team monitored the frame rate delivered by the Essential Anatomy application as it performed a range of specific tasks. 1 Preliminary Performance Analysis of the Application Frame-Rate Measurements While significant effort was required to port the application to native code, eliminating any reliance on emulation, the team reported performance gains of approximately 1.55x over the previous version. This approach enabled the use of code optimizations and development tools built specifically to deliver high performance on the Intel Atom processor. These devices are capable of supporting computationally intensive applications, and the platforms are also equipped with Intel Gen7 graphics, which helps support very high-quality graphics quality and performance.Īs a first step in improving the performance of Essential Anatomy, Intel recommended porting the entire application to native code for Intel architecture, as opposed to working from the original code base that was created for ARM*. In particular, both companies were interested in optimizing the Essential Anatomy application for tablets and other devices based on the fourth-generation Intel® Atom™ processor system-on-chip (SoC). The company engaged with Intel to identify opportunities for code optimization that would help create the best user experience possible, including performance headroom to prepare for additional software features and functionality that may be added in the future. As in most such projects, the initial port to Android devices presented opportunities for improvement, to take full advantage of the new platform’s capabilities, in functional areas such as smoothness of movement when manipulating models, particularly when zooming and rotating complex structures with multiple layers. To expand the product’s market potential, the company contracted with an external provider to port it to Android and Microsoft Windows*. User-driven manipulation to expose deeper internal structures.ģD4Medical initially developed Essential Anatomy for iOS and distributed it using the Apple app store. Keeping up with 3D4Medical’s high user-experience standards requires real-time rendering and fluid visual movement through the models, while also smoothly supporting other elements of the app, such as the rich user interface and reference material.įigure 1. The deep levels of detail and accuracy in these anatomical models, as well as the rich capabilities for manipulating them on demand, place enormous burdens on Essential Anatomy’s 3D purpose-built rendering engine. The company continually adds new features, such as animated functional views of anatomical systems and the ability to "slice" through structures, so users can obtain cross-sectional views. Structures can also be zoomed and rotated, for examination in deep detail, from any angle. The interface provides a virtual body from which users can peel back layers to reveal deeper structures, as well as isolating, comparing, and analyzing elements of the skeletal, circulatory, and nervous systems-among many others-as shown in Figure 1. Students, medical practitioners, and others can manipulate and explore some 4,000 detailed anatomical structures in 3D4Medical’s Essential Anatomy application. To ensure outstanding results from 3D4Medical’s brilliant, interactive teaching and reference application for human anatomy on Android* devices, Intel pinpointed opportunities for performance improvements, helping expand the product’s market potential. And if the author is a particularly gifted writer, there’s so many covers there because there’s a lot of visual metaphors that I can riff on. When I design a book cover I have to listen to a lot of people-marketing, agents-but the first voice I listen to is the author’s voice. I read someplace that dyslexics often read with more inference, which makes total sense, because that’s what I do. “I invert things all the time,” says Twomey, “which is normal for people who are visual thinkers. It was a noteworthy turn of events for someone who realized later in life that she’s dyslexic. She enjoyed designing the covers more than anything else, and soon parlayed her talent and experience into a position at Simon & Schuster’s paperback imprint, Pocket Books. “I liked the immediacy of graphic design at that time,” Twomey recalls. So, she took classes in typography and paste-ups and mechanicals at the School for the Visual Arts, which led to jobs with a type designer and in a design studio.Īt the design studio, she worked on catalogs, ads, and the occasional book cover for the firm’s publishing clients. In New York City, she passed the union exams to become a set designer, but she still needed to complete a required course in lighting design-that wouldn’t be offered for a year-before applying to union jobs. Twomey studied art history, printmaking, sculpture, and photography in college, but earned a BFA in painting because it was the most challenging major that taught her the largest skill set. Pre-internet, you really had to be in New York City to be a designer. “And I wanted to pursue an artistic career-I was very clear about that. “I always loved the city lights,” Twomey remembers. And it was too scary!”īut for the Long Island native and SUNY New Paltz graduate, there was no other choice. I lived two blocks from CBGB but never went because I thought it was too scary. “It was not a pretty sight,” Anne Twomey, Creative Director of Celadon Books, says of downtown Manhattan and the “crumbling-walled, walk-up tenement” she moved into after college in 1979. So you don’t need to fill the whole table with repetitions of the first column. Unlike the built-in feature, this will index just as the plain “Index” command would. Finally I also tested it with a table where I leave the second column empty. So you could use “CharacterNotInSet(-)” to exclude things like “Yamato-takeru” from the “Yamato” search, etc. Also since it uses Powerfind you could use Powerfind bubbles in your word list. I have set the options to “-iw”, and this seems to work for your case. Since it uses Powerfind you can set your own search options. But the macro uses the list and runs a search for each item in the list and applies the index using the term in the second column. Here’s a macro that works almost the same as the built-in feature, and it should work with the same word list. But for a language like French this is a problem. It seems that the feature only indexes the term, if the item is “a word” in the text. This would seem to be a problem related to how the Index Using Word List feature defines word. > I found another problem: when we run Index Using Word List, some occurrences of a word that is listed in the list file do not get indexed: one of the cases in which the word is not indexed is when it comes just after an apostrophe (for example, if you have "antiquité" in your word list, "the antiquité" would be indexed, but not "l'antiquité", etc.). > On 2015 Oct 27, at 11:53, Nobumi Iyanaga wrote: LISTSERV - NISUS Archives - Hello Nobumi, |
